DAILY LOG

March 28th
Birding Laifeng Shan Park, Tengchong 腾冲来凤山森林公园

With dawn around 07:00 in west China, we were driven to the top of Lai Feng Shan at 07:30 . It is only 250m higher than Tengchong town itself, but was more exposed and noticeably colder. We barely had time to view a pair of Little Pied Flycatchers before rain drove us into a shelter where a trio of local musicians played and schoolchildren practiced their English with us.

We decided to walk downhill along the drivable track for a change, but the Spot-breasted Parrotbills mentioned by Steve Anyon Smith the previous day did not appear. Near the graves at the foot of the hill were Large Niltava, Brown-winged Parrotbill and Perny’s Squirrel.

In the evening we met the others and their driver at the Yudu Hotel, including Dong Jiantian (Maicha) , LI Kam-cheong (KC), and Sven Renner of Birdlife. After our hot pot dinner we returned to our respective hostelries, but then some difficulty arose with the driver/vehicle. Fortunately, Taylor of the Red Guest House recommended a local company that rented out 4WDs.
