John & Jemi HOLMES (John Holmes 孔思義 & Jemi AP WONG 黃亞萍) live in Hong Kong’s New Territories, with the skyscrapers of Shenzhen visible from the kitchen window and Mai Po Nature Reserve a few kilometres away.
We are long-term supporters of the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society (HKBWS), World Wide Fund For Nature Hong Kong (WWFHK), and the Oriental Bird Club (OBC).
Active membership of the HKBWS has included leading outings, and participating in various bird surveys over the years, including HK’s official monthly waterfowl counts. We have contributed bird records and photographs to “A Photo Guide to Hong Kong birds” and annual editions of The Hong Kong Bird Report and the HKBWS quarterly Bulletins of which John edits the English edition.
Our photos and birding notes have appeared in OBC’s Birding Asia magazine, China Bird reports and various projects of Hong Kong’s green groups including WWFHK, Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden and The Conservancy Association.
Online, a selection of our photos may be seen on the Oriental Bird Images website and China Wild Birds & Mammals databases. Other photos are placed with professional photo agencies, Vireo in the United States and the Frank Lane Picture Agency in the UK.
The “Handbook of the Birds of the World” series by Lynx Edicions includes some of our work as does Lynx’s Internet Bird Collection. Other publication credits include various books and magazines, including some of the recent A & C Black/ Helm bird photo guide books.
Travel in Asia, especially in China, has broadened our horizons and we have visited many birding sites, both well-known and more obscure. We have written up reports of most of our trips and tried to be informative about how and where we went. There are many more areas unknown to us, and we hope to continue to travel and share as we go.
